Ping pong tables have become hugely popular in recent years with many players looking to practice their skills at home, and casual players looking for a fun game to play in their spare time. But how much do table tennis tables actually cost, and is it a worthwhile investment for you?
In this article, I’ll compare how much different ping pong tables cost and what you get for your money, so you can decide if it’s the right purchase for you.
The Quick Answer
Ping pong tables cost roughly $1000 on average but can range from $200 up to $5000. Good quality indoor ping pong tables usually start at around $500, whilst professional-level tables cost upwards of $1500. Outdoor tables usually cost slightly more, with good quality tables starting at around $750.

What Affects the Price?
There are several factors that affect how expensive a ping pong table is including:
- Top Thickness
- Overall quality
- Additional features and accessories

Top Thickness
The thickness of the ping pong table top is one of the most important factors to consider as it affects how well the ball bounces. The key thing to remember, is that a thicker top results in a better overall playing experience, which is why professional tables all have the thickest tops available.
The top thickness is different for indoor and outdoor tables:
- Indoor tables: the thickness ranges from 12mm to 25mm (1/2″ to 1″). Professional tables tops are 1″ (25 mm) thick, but anything over around 18 mm is considered very good quality. A thickness of 16-18 mm is great for more casual players, whilst anything under 16 mm is on the low-end and is more susceptible to warping overtime.
- Outdoor tables: the thickness ranges from 3.5 to 9 mm (1/8″ to 3/8″). Anything 6 mm thick or more is good quality, and 8-9 mm thick tables are very expensive. Anything 3-5 mm is usually lower quality and the ball will not bounce as well.

When talking about the table’s “top”, we’re just talking about the upper section, not the overall thickness of the table. Here’s a diagram to demonstrate.
Overall Quality
The top thickness plays a role here, but you should also consider the frame, wheels and net. The net is easy to upgrade, but cheaper tables will come with lower quality nets.
The sturdiness of the frame will also affect the price. Thin and flimsy frames are much cheaper than higher quality thicker frames. The material will also affect the price, with plastic being used in place or metal and wood on cheaper tables.
Also consider the wheels if you are going to be moving the table frequently. Cheaper tables (under $750) will usually have 2″ wheels which aren’t as robust as the 4″ wheels found on more expensive tables.
The most expensive tables will be “ITTF approved” which means they meet the quality and regulation standards of the International Table Tennis Federation. ITTF approved tables are usually at least $1500-$2000 in the US and £1200 in the UK.
Additional Features and Accessories
Here are some extra features to look out for:
- Net adjustment (tension and height)
- Adjustable legs (useful if playing on uneven ground)
- Built-in storage for the balls and paddles
- Ball dispensers (seen on very premium models)
- Corner protection pads
- Locking wheels
- The quality and quantity of the paddles and balls that come included

Purchasing a table tennis table from a well-known and reputable brand will always command a higher price, even if it has similar features, compared to a non-specialist. However, it’s usually a good idea to buy from one of the more popular brands as the quality and warranty is typically better. Here are some of the most popular ping pong table brands:

Type of Table
